They are only meant for certain situations such as after thoroughly washing a waxing your car before a long storage. NOT: every time you park your dirty Volkswagen CC, or any car.
To the person who parks in front of my complex: Not only is it a stupid inconvenience, you're putting a stupid amount of swirls on your car. It's going to make your obviously proud purchase look like this.

In my ignorant youth, I thought a car cover would protect my non-running car from the elements while I amassed funds. Turns out it just takes all those elements and turns them into one super disgusting layer of film just between the paint and the cover.

I can't describe how bad I want to put a tape line down the center of that hood and give one side a good two stage with a DA. Talk about a before and after.

I use a car cover because my car doesn't have windows! Or a windshield! And it's got a big ole' hoe in the roof!

Was thinking of buying a car cover for the winter when its supposed to snow, hate scraping the ice off before I go to work.

I think you apply to "certain situations".

Make a cheap vinegar mixture, or buy some rain and ice repellent.

They actually have windshield covers for this exact purpose. It's kind of like one of those sun reflectors, except it's flexible and goes on the outside of your car. They sell them everywhere in Canada.

I don't ever cover my cars, even if they don't get driven for extended periods of time.
I do a quick wash and wax, spray detail, and park. If it's covered in dust, I'll do a quick rinse before driving.
Car covers are such an inconvenience to me. Now, if I had the space for a carcoon, that's a totally different question, and the answer is yes, yes I would store the SL600 in a carcoon if I had the space and money for one.

I bought one for my wife last Christmas. It seems to work well enough. If you want the Oppo alternative, an old bed sheet closed in both doors also works.

I've actually used a 6'x4' piece of carpet for that situation. But that was for a car that 1 has a rattle can paint job, and 2 has hole in the hood above the pod filter.

better PSA, don't be a cheap ass and buy a wal mart car cover
I have a california car cover on my car and it doesn't mar the paint up.

Huh, good to know. Guess I'll be finding a place with a garage before I purchase a nice cars then.

Nothing wrong with keeping your car outside if you maintain your paint properly, wax/sealant, wash.

Its pretty easy to mix up. I got to see a lot of holdens this summer on a vacation down under, so I knew for sure it was. Then I had to go look up vauxhall, because I had no idea what that looked like

What material is on the inside?
I'm a firm believer on the less you touch your paint the better. When done properly it's fine though.

Dual-action as in dual-action polisher, as opposed to an orbital buffer (cheap, worthless) or a rotary buffer (frightening machines of satan which can burn holes in your paint but are also capable of amazing things when in knowledgeable, skilled hands).

BOOM- car cover.

Also, spiders. Maybe it's just my dad's cousin's Jeep, but I think the cover is a huge part of the reason that it is always full of spiders.

Oh god, this is the tackiest car cover I've ever seen. This is like those T-shirts you can get with your face printed on them.

I can one up

Its a dustop cover, calcarcover has everything on their site about it
When you cover dirty cars and move the cover around on it alot it grinds dirt into the paint and causes what you pictured, thats the real problem.

if you wat a black car to stay clean then you might as well go with a dofferent color

RainX makes scraping the ice off much easier, but doesn't totally eliminate the task.

Just a preliminary pass with a buffing compound applied by hand would leave a start before and after contrast.

I will continue to use a car cover. I don't put one on if the vehicle is exceptionally dirty, I buff/polish the car often enough that it doesn't matter, and the car cover offers UV protection, something very important when trying to prevent your acrylic roof from cracking, your windshield from delaminating, and your interior from decomposing.

I'm putting away my Chrysler for the winter in my garage. it will sit pretty much until Spring. What kind of cover, if any, should I use?

Would this count as inpersonating a cop car?

Are you sure those swirls are caused by a car cover?
Just asking because I have used one for years and never had that particular problem, BUT I have seen that happen from improperly washed & waxed cars numerous times.
![]() 10/29/2014 at 12:23 |

No this was just an example of swirl marks. But yes I've seen swirls from a car cover. Usually only happens when the cover is used when the car is dirty.

Just buy a good quality cover, which will set you back $350 or so, and avoid the $60 Pep Boys covers

Some of us have to use car covers because it’s the only way to keep the car dry. Or at least it would be if it actually worked...
